I needed a stable linux system (so not yet kernels 2.3.X or 2.4.X).

I found the site about back port of the USB code to 2.2.X kernels (I used 2.2.16).
The web site: http://www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/

The following steps will enable the floppy:

1. Download 2.2.16 kernel (I didn't try the redhat version, yet, just the simple tar file).

2. Download the usb patch: http://www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/usb-2.4.0-test2-pre2-for-2.2.16-v3.diff.gz

3. Open the kernel source, apply the patch as indicated in the web page.

4. Edit the Makefile and added the Extraversion to be vaio1, so I will not demage the
   default /lib/modules/2.2.16/ modules files.

5. Configure the kernel using the folloing kernel config file.
   Experimental Code YES, USB YES, SCSI Modules, vfat Module, ...

6. build the new kernel and install kernel and modules, running lilo.

7. reboot with the new kernel.

8. use the following commands as script to load the modules and enable the floppy.
   (the order of the commands is important, I found out)

** Trying to remove the usb-uhci module cause kernel error messages !.
